Books we love: “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie

How did you find out about this book?

My godfather gave it to me when I was 16 years old. When he read it he found it inspiring, so he wanted to share it with me.

Can you give us a brief summary of the book?

In a sentence, it’s about personal development and understanding human nature. The book helps develop the communication and leadership skills necessary to deal with people and make them feel valued and appreciated.

What’s your favorite part of the book?

Although the title can seem shocking, it’s not a book about manipulation. Rather, the author emphasizes that sincerity and empathy are important qualities. It’s written in an accessible way so that the tips can easily be put into action. It’s also full of anecdotes about famous people from around the world which helps illustrate the author’s points.

What lessons does the book teach us? How has it affected your personal and work life?

The major take-away is that you should always approach a situation from the point of view of the other person involved. Focus on the positive; understand your own errors before criticizing others. These are tips for every day at work and in your personal life.

Why would you recommend this book?

In this era of individualism, we often forget that our relationships with others and good communication are important. I think everyone can learn something from this book.
